On September 11 ET, Lisa from BLACKPINK took the stage for her solo debut at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Her performance of new tracks "New Woman" and "Rockstar," supported by a group of dancers, was highly anticipated. This event marked a significant milestone in Lisa's career as she showcased her talents independently for the first time at such a major international event. Additionally, Lisa earned the Best K-Pop award for "Rockstar," further adding to her list of achievements.

However, despite her previous acclaim as a standout performer in BLACKPINK, Lisa's solo act did not meet the high expectations set by her established reputation. Reactions from critics and fans on social media highlighted a sense of disappointment, as many felt the performance did not live up to the dynamic stage presence she is known for.

THE NEW YORK POST delivered a particularly harsh review, branding Lisa's performance a "K-flop." The critique placed her among the least impressive acts of the night:

> "After getting an introduction by Paris Hilton — who threw in her catchphrase 'That’s hot' — Lisa was absolutely not. This K-pop singer was more of a K-FLOP when she performed with an army of dancers who couldn’t save her from the pure cheesiness that left us all wondering how she even got the invite."

In addition, BILLBOARD placed Lisa's performance at the bottom of their ranking, listing her 16th out of 16 acts in their "Worst to Best" evaluation, calling it a
"swing and a miss":

> "The BLACKPINK member has proven herself adept at killer choreography and eye-popping visuals in the past, but LISA’s solo turn at the 2024 VMAs felt like a swing and a miss. 'New Woman' could have used a little oomph from Rosalía, and the 'Rockstar' choreography was solid but never head-turning, much less show-stopping."

Social media reactions mirrored these critical assessments, with many viewers expressing dissatisfaction over Lisa’s use of lip-syncing and the overall mediocrity of the performance. This feedback highlights a gap between expectations and delivery, given her high-profile status in the K-pop industry.

This year’s MTV VMAs were noticeably impacted by BTS’s absence due to their military service, a void that highlighted the gap between their global impact and the performance of others. BTS has always been a symbol of excellence and pride for South Korea, consistently elevating the nation’s presence on the world stage. Their performances were known for their high energy and unmatched skill, leaving audiences awestruck and setting a standard that was tough to beat.

In contrast, Lisa’s performance this year fell short of the high bar set by BTS. While BTS's absence was felt deeply, it ironically underscored the limitations of other acts. Where BTS once captivated and impressed, Lisa's performance at the VMAs struggled to make a significant impact, emphasizing how their absence left a noticeable void in the event. It’s a reminder of just how high BTS set the standard, and how their presence always ensured a memorable and groundbreaking showcase for South Korean talent.
